Since I've not played any level based systems (note that I know them, their pro's, their con's) I'm not tired of them the way so many people are. I guess it is time to delve into the books themselves and to start doing some skimming. I could go on and on about the back and forth nature of my current thoughts on the subject. Then again GURPS does encourage you start out with simple and slowly make your game more complex until you hit that "sweet spot" of personal comfort. Due to GURPS massive breadth I do worry a great deal about feeling as if I am "suffocating" under the sheer breadth of options and mechanics available to me. While I think GURPS will be easier to learn than FC, on the way the 4E Basic Set is laid out alone, I'm trying to decide if I feel FC will be a better introduction to the hobby and complex game mechanics in general. My biggest reservation is that this is my first foray into the world of PnP RPG's and my return to PnP gaming itself for the last three years. yummm!) without a TON of homebrewing and system tweaking. I'll be waiting quite a while for the MasterCraft library to fill out before I can begin to mix genres (Fantasy + SciFi = Warhammer 40K. GURPS to me is simply more "pure" and I feel that through it my imagination alone is the only roadblock in terms of what types of games I can play.

While I could do fantasy within GURPS I think I would have a much easier and probably a more stress free time creating for and playing it.

I think FC is chalk full of awesome game mechanics and would be one of the best fantasy experiences I could get right now. I personally am more taken with GURPS as a storytelling platform. I've ready many comments about Fantasy Craft being rather easy, compared to other systems that support world building, to get setup but that running the games can take a bit more forethought in preparation of sessions, versus GURPS where a general outline and having templates on hand greatly reduces the possibility of being "caught off guard" during a game. I have definitely heard that GURPS can be a pain in terms of preparing a campaign but once you start it is rather easy to run. Thank you very much for your extended replies.

Same for character creation, it'd be easy to post an example step by step of making a guy. I'm sure if you asked someone could put up an example combat in step by step form on the forum, or hell, I could even take notes at our groups next session and post a combat report from it for you. I don't think the game is hard to learn for anyone familiar with d20 in any form and who understands the basic terms and ideas inheriant in the gaming style. There also seems to be a more obvious balance line in Crafty's games then I've seen in GURPS. One thing I found is that I had an easier time learning FC then I did GURPS, but my gaming history started with ADnD and went to 3rd ed, so level based systems, and feats were probably more second nature to me then point costs and the like. You mentioned Battletech in your other thread, but I've not played it, so I can't compare the two. Pawsplay sumarised the two systems basically how I would have, so I'll just ask what you're more comfortable with - level based systems, or free form point buy systems? If you started gaming with GURPS 2nd, you'd have less trouble making the leap to GURPS4e then to FC. I've wargamed on and off for the last 12 years This is indeed my first foray into the world of PnP RPG.

The point of this thread is to help me decide on which system would be a better introduction to the world of pen and paper. Note: I have no doubt I will play both systems. Any feedback on this topic would be most welcome. I'm certainly not trying to say one is better than the other, however I am trying to figure out what benefits each system will offer me both in the short term as well as long term. So I'm curious, to any of you folks who know both systems, what kind of things you feel FC does better than GURPS and vise versa. I originally purchased FC because I felt it would save me a lot of time and I could still indulge my worldbuilding tendencies. In the end though I'm afraid GURPS will take significantly longer to worldbuild in than FC will. I could go on about my love of GURPS and its many sourcebooks, the possibilities I feel it offers me, and how I feel it would be far easier to learn than FC. Today I came across and confirmed information that suggested FC may be more difficult to pickup than I had anticipated. Before looking into it myself I had heard great things about FC and world building.

I want to world build more than anything else in a game system so writing or tools that help streamline or simply save time during this process are important to me.
